I was completely wrong! The two forgotten characters on my hard drive do belong in the story that I originally made half an outline for way back in March! The missing element was my nameless possibly immortal character from my little drabble. I put her into the story, changed up a few elements, and suddenly I feel as though I struck gold. The words are flowing much faster than I expected, at 5,765 words as of right now. A bit ahead of schedule!
What is killing me right now is that the Nano site is down, so i can't update my count. C'est la vie.
